History
Ungvar… in 1154 Arabic geographer and traveller Al-Idrisi marked our town on the map that was being done for Norman king Roger II. The name consists of two parts: Ung and Var. It is translated from all interpretations as "castle on the river Uzh" (from Turkic uzh, uz, onh - water, var - town, fortress, castle). With the time being name Ungvar has changed and transformed into modern: Uzhhorod.
Due to its position on the border of Carpathian Mountains and valley of middle Danube, almost in the heart of Europe, starting from 13 century all economic and political routes passed through Ungvar. Lots of important guests came to us from all the world: starting from leaders, military offices, scientists up to simple merchants and artisans. Plenty of them fell in love with the town and stayed here for ever.
During its history Uzhhorod was a part of 18 countries: from Dacians and Romans to modern Ukraine. Multinational cultures influenced the traditions, inner structure of the town, mentality of citizens. Even up to nowadays there have been saved parks set by Italians, blocks built by Check, factories designed by Belgians and churches built by Greek and Russian emigrants.
In different times Uzhhorod produced a great impression on celebrities, such as Beila Bartok (well known Hungarian composer), Herman Biderman (Austrian scientist), Ivan Olbrachrt (Check writer), Shandor Petefi (Hungarian poet), Ferenz Heverdler (Hungarian artist), Mykola Sadovskiy (Ukrainian stage director),Rockwell Kent (American artist).
